Well....when you say heat you mean HEAT. Here (Western Massachusetts) they are at their best in August which is in the 90s and extremely humid. I usually poke some silicon pellets in around the plants so I can water once a day or less. Last year I used 3 year old seeds I found when we moved and they were prolific. So I would guess if you give them water regularly they may survive that barren wasteland type of sun.

How funny Becky. I just planted a pack of zinias and was shocked at how fast they came it. Sprinkled the rest of the pack along a picket fence, but have not looked to see if we have any growth. How do they take heat?

oh, and also Tangerine Dream peppers. They are a beautiful plant that looks ornamental but has very sweet orange bell peppers that produce like crazy. I grew them in a container and gave them my standard treatment of plant, water and then forget about them. They were amazing! I have only been able to find them on the Burpee website.

I would just like to add in the non-veggie seed world another VERY easy flower seed is Zinnia. These grow in almost every soil and will tolerate neglect well too. They just keep on sending up the flowers as fast as you can cut them too. This from a zone 5 garden.
